We’re Dr. Nicholas Carnes and Dr. Bruce Jentleson, the principal course instructors. Introduction to democracy and its variations

The video explores three types of democracy: participatory, pluralist, and elite. Participatory democracy involves broad public participation, while pluralist democracy features many competing interests. Elite democracy limits participation to a select group. Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses, shaping the way societies govern.

The Athenian Agora and the experiment in democracy

The Agora was the heart of ancient Athens' democracy, where citizens participated directly in government. Key principles like meritocracy and equality before the law were established during the 5th century BCE.
